Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The excursion will focus on gravitational mass movements in Lower Austria. Amongst other locations, rockfall sites at the Ofenlochstraße/ Ybbstal near Waidhofen/Ybbs, landslide and earth-flow activities close to Konradsheim as well as the Salcher Landslide Observatory in Gresten will be visited.
At the respective sites the processes themselves, their preparatory and triggering factors as well as methodological approaches to investigate these processes will be discussed. Gravitational mass movements can cause (social/ economic) damage, especially in populated areas. How society deals with these phenomena will therefore also be addressed and options regarding natural hazard and risk management will be reviewed.
This 1-day field trip will be carried out with a coach (bus). At the sites, small hikes (1-2 h) will be undertaken (partly on landslides and in steep terrain). Good hiking shoes/ sturdy shoes are mandatory. The excursion will take place at any weather conditions and it is recommended to dress accordingly (rain jacket/ umbrella/ hiking shoes etc.). Take care to bring food/ provisions.
