Aims, contents and method of the course
The excursion will focus on gravitational mass movements in Lower Austria. Amongst other spots, the rockfall sites at Ofenloch near Waidhofen/Ybbs, the Salcher Landslide Observatory and the earth flow close to Konradsheim will be visited. Geological disposition and the triggering factors of the respective landslide processes will be discussed. In addition, protective measures and the options for a sustainable management of landslide hazards and risks will be reviewed. This 1-day field trip will be carried out with a motor-coach. At the sites, small hikes (1-2 h) will be undertaken (partly on landslides and in steep terrain). Good hiking shoes are required. The excursion will take place at any weather conditions and it is recommended to dress accordingly (rain jacket, umbrella, hiking shoes etc.)
