Aims, contents and method of the course

In this seminar the students are informed about relationships between international conventions for the protection of species and nature and different types of collections hold in Botanical Gardens. Using examples from the Botanical Garden of the University of Vienna, the potential contributions of ex-situ collections for conservation purposes are discussed

Assessment and permitted materials

obligatory: 1-2 oral presentations/participant (depending of the number of partiucipants). Additionally evaluated: Ad-hoc contributions (oral and written) incl. contributions to discussions.
Minimum requirements for positive evaluation: sum of evaluations of oral presentation(s) and of ad-hoc contributions > 50% of total points.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Knowledge about international conventions for species and nature protection. Consequences of the implementation of such conventions in practical research fields. especially for the management of collections of living organisms

Examination topics

Introducing lectures, work with literature, presentations of the students, practical experiences in the Botanic Garden
