Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
This course is mandatory for students of the Master Evolutionary Systems Biology or Genetics and Developmental Biology, who have done their MES6/7 (lab rotation I or II (best both)) or optional for students who have done the Vertiefungsübung of MGE. Based on the results obtained in one of these 6 weeks project work, they learn to write a scientific proposal following the general guidelines of the FWF and put these in a broader context. At the end of the semester they will present and defend it in an oral presentation.
Assessment and permitted materials
The students have to submit a proposal of about 10 pages and present and defend it in an oral presentation. The written proposal accounts for 50% of the grade, the oral defense also for 50% of the grade.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
The proposal should follow the format of a typical FWF grant proposal, which will be provided on Moodle. The criteria are a clear background and development of the scientific question, the rationale and logic of the planned experiments and how convincing the application is. The oral presentation assessment will rely on the logic and rational outline of the project with the necessary background information and convincing arguments. It will be also assessed how the student replies to challenging questions.
