Attendance compulsory at the kick-off meeting (Wednesday, March 4, 3 p.m.): Those who do not attend without prior notice (sonja.windhager@univie.ac.at) will be deregistered so that students from the waiting list succeed.
You can choose whether to attend the kick-off meeting (March 4 3 p.m.) and theory sessions (March 18, March 25, April 15; 3 p.m.) digitally or on site. A Zoom link will be available on Moodle.
Interested students with missing ECTS credits from prerequisites are kindly requested to register via sonja.windhager@univie.ac.at before the preliminary meeting, at the latest by March 2. Any requests from previous terms will not be transferred automatically. You are then invited to join the kick-off meeting to see if a place is available. If more than 10 ECTS are missing, late registration is not possible.

Aims, contents and method of the course

Aims: Students acquire knowledge on scientific work in the natural sciences, on how to search for and further process scientific literature, conduct and write up a scientific paper, and present it. This should enable the prospective teachers to keep up with up-to-date scientific literature and supervising and grading pre-scientific papers (Vorwissenschaftliche Arbeiten).

Contents: The seminar intends to convey strategies and a toolkit for a literature search and a comprehensive literature review on a specific topic. The acquired expertise shall be summarized in an integrative way, i.e., not just summarizing the literature but also critically discussing it.
Supervisors will be assigned during the kick-off meeting.

Method of the course: Introductory lectures including demonstrations in databases and relevant software to teach the necessary skills to conduct a scientific literature review and present it orally to an audience of specialists; guided empirical work and writing up of a thesis on a specific topic.

Assessment and permitted materials

Written prospectus, presentation, term paper: scientific paper following the rules of the natural sciences.
To safeguard good academic practice, the lecturer may ask students to reflect on their written assignements in a conversation. Students must successfully pass this reflection.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

A minimum of 51 points is required for the successful completion of the course. The single components are weighted as follows: written prospectus (10 points), presentation (20 points), term paper (70 points). Grade 1: 87 – 100 points, Grade 2: 75 – 86,99 points, Grade 3: 63 – 74,99 points, Grade 4: 51 – 62,99 points, Grade 5: < 51 points.
If good scientific practice is violated in any assessment, you will fail to pass the course.
