Classes

Currently no class schedule is known.

Aims, contents and method of the course

Our zoological fieldtrips focus on the very high diversity of biotops and of terrestric and aquatic animals in the surroundings of Vienna; excursions range from meadows, woods and subalpine habitats to oligotrophic prealpine lakes, Danubean backwaters and different types of running waters. Each fieldtrip guide will focus on an individual set of habitats.

Assessment and permitted materials

Attendance control, control of activity during sampling and processing of samples, finally written group protocols (maximum 5 persons per protocol).

Examination topics

After an in-depth introduction to the habitat type supported by handouts and into the sampling methodology, participants conduct guided field sampling. Subsequently, the material is sorted and identified and the most important diagnostic characters as well as taxa-specific ecological and biological details are presented in the plenum. In addition, conservation aspects and the ecological impact of alien species is discussed.

Reading list

Brohmer, Fauna von Deutschland. Herausgegeben von M. Schaefer. Quelle & Meyer (Exkursionsfauna).

Information

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The participants are aware of the basic ecological principles valid for the selected terrestric and aquatic habitats in the surroundings of Vienna. They are familiar with the most important sampling methods, the basic priciples of conservation biology, the biology and ecology of key taxa and have trained their identification skills. They are aware of composing field and excursion protocols.
