Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
This course teaches the basics of science communication in the field of biology. Using concrete examples (e.g., communicating scientific findings on climate change to different target groups), this course conveys the basics of science communication (Unit 1) and includes a block each on creating texts (Unit 2) and infographics (Unit 3). Specifically, the course teaches and applies common methods from classic and digital science communication (including journalistic concepts; social media communication; creating infographics). After the course, the participants should be able to prepare press releases, postings, and infographics/images that are appropriate to their scientific work for target group-oriented and effective science communication.Complementary to this course, two other consecutive but independent block courses "Science Writing and Communication" and "Scientific Writing Workshop" are offered (see ufind for details).
Assessment and permitted materials
For a positive assessment, attendance and active participation on all three course days is required. Specifically, attendance and active participation in the exercises in the course (50%) and active participation in assignments between the courses (50%) are included in the assessment.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Prerequisite for participation in the course is a timely online registration. Completing the course with a positive assessment requires active participation on all three course days as well as timely and complete submission of all in- and between-course exercises. Participants can work on the assignments independently using the documents provided in the course units and via Moodle. They are actively supported in this by the course leaders.
Examination topics
The course can be positively completed by attendance on all three course days, as well as a timely and complete submission of the exercises in and between the course days. A separate examination does not take place.
