Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
This course offers an exciting journey into the molecular processes that shape genetic diversity, exploring how this diversity is maintained, selected, and transformed through time. Students will uncover the patterns that drive evolution at the genetic level while gaining hands-on experience with the powerful tools scientists use to study these processes.A special emphasis will be placed on paleogenomics—the study of ancient DNA—which allows us to peer directly into the past and reveal how genetic diversity has shifted across thousands of years. By bridging modern genetics with ancient evidence, students will see how cutting-edge molecular approaches can illuminate evolutionary history, human adaptation, and even the rise and fall of species. The course will be taught through real-world examples, case studies, and active group work. Students will collaborate on research-style questions, simulating the process of scientific discovery and critical thinking. This approach ensures that learning is both dynamic and applied, preparing participants to not only understand genetic diversity but also to actively investigate it in modern and ancient contexts.
Assessment and permitted materials
The course is going to be evaluated with a project that the students are going to prepare as well as one assignment.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
A minimum of 80% of assistance is required for the course evaluation
Examination topics
The examination topics will be the lessons and material discussed during the lessons, all the basis can be found in the material provided and discussed in the lessons.
Reading list
The literature of this course will be a set of scientific papers that will be illustrative of the discussed material, such papers will be sent to the students.
