Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
During the lecture all bird species occurring in Austria as breeders or non-breeding visitors are presented, with details given on numbers, area, trends, habitat requirements, threats and conservation measures. Species important for conservation are discussed in more detail than common and widespread species or vagrants. Topic conservation issues (eg. Control of predatory resp. fish eating species, effective conservation of large species) are also discussed. As an introduction basic information on distributional patterns, species turnover, threats und general conditions for bird conservation in Austria is given.
Assessment and permitted materials
Written exam, emphasis is laid upon integrated knowledge, eg.importance of certain habitat types for threatened species or the impact of human use on bird communities.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Broad knowledge of the bird species ocurring in Austria with main emphasis on those species that are important from a conservational point of view. Birds are often the main focus in conservation work, either for selection of protected areas or during impact assessments, for control of success of conservation measures (eg. agri-environment schemes) or generally for monitoring of biodiversity. The lecture shall priovide basic knowledge for such tasks.
Examination topics
Lecture, illustrated by photographs of each species. During winter a half day excursion within Vienna will be offered to observe some of the species in the field that are presented during the lecture.
