Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Current questions and methods of population biology will be applied to amphibian populations. Research will focus on green toads and fire-bellied toads (fotographic registration of individuals, to estimate population sizes and home ranges) and recently restored water bodies in the Vienna Woods. Projects on other species are also possible.

Aims: Understanding of current topics in evolutionary ecology and conservation biology, knowledge of life histories of native amphibians, ability to apply research methods of population biology in the field, practice in writing scientific reports.

Methods: Discussion of scientific papers, practical field research in small teams, data analysis; writing a report.

Assessment and permitted materials

Assessment of practical work and the written report.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Minimal requirements: 50 hours field work, written report
Assessment criteria: 40% practical work and oral presentation, 60% written report (30% for accuracy of data presentation, 30% for quality of writing and graphical design)
