Group assignment will be done after the registration period: to this end, there will be a poll in Moodle, where students can indicate their preferred groups; this information will be used for final assignments.

Required equipment:
(1) Preparation tools for microscopy (pointed tweezers, 2 dissecting needles, 2 razor blades or a scalpel, 2 slides, coverslips) - available online, alongside the usual suspects such as Amazon, e.g., from https://www.betzold.at/cat/3530030/
(2) Magnifying glasses (ideally folding magnifying glasses, as these are also suitable for use outdoors) with 10x to 20x magnification - available online, alongside the usual suspects such as Amazon, e.g., from https://www.lupenhandel.de/lupen/technische-einschlaglupen/
(3) Smooth drawing paper (A4 or A5), HB pencil, eraser, and sharpener

For hygiene reasons, laboratory goggles (safety goggles) are recommended when using a microscope (available online at, e.g., https://www.office-discount.at ; price c. 5-20 €).

Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Aims and contents:
- Knowledge of the most important organisational types, structural diversity, and life cycles of algae, bryophytes, vascular plants and fungi (with special emphasis on the adaptive value of novel features in the context of colonization of terrestrial habitats) as well as their relevance in ecosystems.
- Acquaintance with and application of specific terminology
- Acquaintance with simple preparation techniques.

Methods:
Students prepare independently for the weekly presence units using course material provided via the e-learning platform; during the practical part (in presence in the course room), after a short introduction (focussing only on the objects to be analysed!) students analyse selected objects micro- and macroscopically.

Assessment and permitted materials

In total 70 points can be earned:
a) 12 assessments (one per course unit, towards the end of the course unit), in the form of scientific drawings, short tests etc, with 5 points each; of these assessments 3 can be cancelled (this also includes missed course units irrespective of the reason; generally, as for all courses with continuous assessment, the rule of obligatory attendance applies), thus in total only 9 assessments contribute to the points: 45 points
Permitted resources: student notes; not permitted are course materials (Moodle) and internet resources (googleing for answers)
b) written end exam: 25 points (in order to be able to finish the course with a psoitive grade, in this written end exam at least 45 % of the points [i.e. at least 11.25 points] have to be reached).

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Minimum requirements for a positive grade are:
38 points (about 54% of the maximally possible points) over the entire course (i.e., course units plus final test), of which at least 11.25 points (45% of the possible points) have to stem from the final test.

Credit key:
0-37.75 points: failed
38-46 points: sufficient
46.25-54.25 points: satisfactory
54.5-62.5 points: good
62.75-70 points: excellent

Examination topics

Topics covered during the course: for the 12 tasks (one per course unit) the topics include those covered in the respective course unit, for the final written assessment this is the entirety of all topics covered during this course (course material provided on the e-learning platform)

Course material is made available on the e-learning platform. These consist of a scriptum and (for some units) of PowerPoint-files (without or with Audio).
