Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Aims and methods:
- Knowledge of morphology and evolution of seed plants, especially with respect to function of structures and adaptations within an ecological context
- Knowledge of most relevant seed plants of the Central European flora (depending on the group, this may be at the species, genus or family level)
- Acquaintance with and application of specific terminology
- Acquaintance with simple preparation techniques

Methods:
Students prepare independently for the weekly presence units using course material provided via the e-learning platform; during the practical part (in presence in the course room), after a short introduction (focussing only on the objects to be analysed!) students analyse selected objects micro- and macroscopically. Results obtained by the students will be discussed either jointly at the end of the course unit or separately after each topic.

Assessment and permitted materials

In total 70 points can be earned:
a) 12 assessments (one per course unit, towards the end of the course unit) with 4.5 points each, each assessment in units taking place in the course room consisting of (i) a short written exam (3 points; the course is interdependent, hence these short exams can also cover topics introduced in a previous unit) and (ii) the student's elaboration on one of the tasks of the course unit (1.5 points); for units taking place in the field only a short written eaxm (4.5 points) is done. -- Of these 12 assessments, 2 can be cancelled (this also includes missed course units, irrespective of the reason for missing the course), thus in total only 10 assessments contribute to the points: 45 points
Permitted resources: non-electronical student notes made during the respective course unit; not permitted are internet resources (googleing for answers, but also the course material on Moodle)
b) written end exam: 25 points

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Minimum requirements for a positive grade are: 38 points (about 54% of the maximally possible points), wherupon for the written end test at least 12 points (48% of the points maximally achievable through this written end test) have to be reached (in case less than 12 points are earned in this written end test, there's one time the possibility for re-doing the written end test).

Credit key:
0-37.75 points: failed
38-46 points: sufficient
46.25-54.25 points: satisfactory
54.5-62.5 points: good
62.75-70 points: excellent

Examination topics

Topics covered during the course: for the 13 tasks (one per course unit) the topics include those covered in the respective course unit, for the final written assessment this is the entirety of topics covered during this course (course material, like script, PowerPoint slides etc, is available on Moodle)
