Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The course covers systematics, taxonomy, nomenclature as well as botanical terminology used in descriptions and identification keys with focus on seed plants. There are two main goals with this course: (1) The students will learn how to determine non-native seed-plants from around the world that are currently cultivated in the Botanical Garden of the University of Vienna and are in need of determination. They will learn how to find and apply the appropriate reference literature and botanical identification keys (both in the form of on-line floras and of traditional taxonomic publications). (2) The second goal will be to produce scientific identification protocols that will be of immediate use to the living collection of the Botanical Garden.

Students are expected to have at least basic knowledge of plant identification using botanical keys.
