Aims, contents and method of the course

General: Atoms, molecules, ions; Periodic properties, Stochiometry; Chemical bonding; Intermolecular forces; Gases, liquids, solids; Thermochemistry; Kinetics; Chemical equilibrium; Acids and Bases; Oxidations and Reductions; Main group elements.
Organic: Alkanes; Alkenes; Cycloalkanes; Polyenes; Alkynes; Principles in stereochemistry; Aromatics, Alcohols; Ethers; Aldehydes and Ketons; Carbonic acids and derivatives; Amines; Biomolecules: Carbohydrates; Amino acids , peptides, proteins; Lipids, Nucleic acids.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Understanding of basic principles of general chemsitry is envisaged. Inorganic compounds of special biological interest will be discussed as well as important classes of organic compounds will be presented.
