Austria has reached a remarkable high standard in environmental protection due to the use of modern technologies for the production of clean fossil fuels as well as the use of end-of-pipe technologies. However, new targets have been set by the EU to further reduce emissions.
Target of this lecture is to teach basic knowledge about
The origin of waste components like NOx, SO2, hydrocarbons, ozone, particulate matters, CO2, the Austrian and EU legislation and an understanding of the principles and limitations of commonly used technologies
The invest costs and costs of operation for selected technologies as well as the energy needed and feedback for the Kyoto CO2 target
The still dominant role of fossil fuels and especially crude oil and its derivates .
Depending on the interest of the students special topics will be offered as invest policy of a large industrial company, waste water treatment, ISO certification, nuclear power plant, analytical methods, authorities and permits. A guided tour through Schwechat refinery is also included.
