Continuous assessment of course work

Vorbesprechung am Mo, 20.3.2017, von 11:15-13 Uhr im Hörsaal II. Eine Teilnahme an der Vorbesprechung ist trotz elektronischer Anmeldung wegen der Kurseinteilung und wichtiger Verlautbarungen erforderlich.
Die erste Kurswoche beginnt am 10.5.2017, die letzte endet am 9.6.2017. Jeder Studierende kann unter 10 Parallelen eine Kurswoche auswählen, die jeweils 6 Tage dauert und in den jeweiligen Kursen auf unterschiedliche Wochentage fällt. Standorte: Wien und Lunz am See. Für die Kursteile in Lunz sind die Teilnehmer in einer Pension in Stationsnähe einquartiert.

Aims, contents and method of the course

Each day of this field course deals with one habitat type (woods, meadows, standing and running waters) in the Wienerwald area and at the Wassercluster in Lunz am See (Lower Austria)l. At each day, students are supervised by a multdiciplinary staff, dealing with soil biology, climatology, hydrology and (limno-)chemistry; in addition, plants and animals are sampled and identified. Subsequently. data and samples are processed in the lab, and student teams present the day's data.

Assessment and permitted materials

Attendance control, oral or written data presentation, and written exam on 19 June, 11:00-13:00 in HS II.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The participants are aware of the basic ecological principles valid for the main Central European habitat and landscape types including deciduous and coniferous woods, grasslands and meadows, standing and running waters as well as national parks. They are familiar with the most important ecological methods and are trained to handle the specific field equipment for soil biology, climate, hydrology and chemistry. Students are able to make surveys in botany and landscape ecology, to sample aquatic and terrestric biota and to identify them in the lab. They are aware of basic ecological data analysis and presentation techniques.

Examination topics

Guided field work (one habitat type per day) in small working groups of 5-10 students led by a multidisiciplinary staff. Guided data analyses in the lab. Handouts are distributed at the start of the course.
