Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course introduces basic concepts (not the maths) of molecular evolution, phylogenetic sequence analysis and phylogenetic treeing methods. Participants apply this knowledge in practical exercises using online databases, web-based tools, and popular command line-based software for phylogenetic sequence analyses. While the general principles of phylogenetic methods apply to all fields of biology, the exercises focus on microbes, ribosomal RNA as molecular marker, and selected protein families.

Assessment and permitted materials

Participation in the course exercises, submitted written protocol, and answered oral assessment questions.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Continuous assessment of course work. Participation and results achieved during the course including a written protocol (70%), and oral assessment of theoretical course content (30%)
