2.00 ECTS (2.00 SWS), SPL 30 - Biologie
Continuous assessment of course work

There will be a mandatory safety instruction for this course. After the registration period, the admitted students have to complete this instruction. The link to the corresponding Moodle course will be sent to you after you have been accepted to the course.
All practice rooms may only be entered with a lab coat and closed shoes, and, if needed, lab glasses must also be purchased - please store private belongings in the cloakroom.

Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Students will learn to use a light microscope, understand its limitations and capabilities, and grasp the structure and function of (plant) cells.
The course covers a selection of topics such as organelles and components of eukaryotic plant cells, organelle movement, fixation, staining, osmotic value, prokaryotic cells, and plant versus animal cells.
We use a light microscope to examine the structure and function of cells. The focus is on plant cells and their preparation.

Assessment and permitted materials

Personal contributions during the course (30 points)
written exposé on a self choosen/proposed topic (30 points)
Written final exam after the end of the course (40 points)
Grading:
0 - 50 points: 5,
51 - 63 points: 4,
64 - 77 points: 3,
78 - 90 points: 2,
91 - 100 points: 1

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Understanding the principal concepts of eukaryotic plant cells, as well as the difference to procaryotic or animal cells with the respective characteristics. The students learn about the principles and correlations of structure and functions of living cells and specialised cell types, and they know the functions and capabilities of light microscopy.

Examination topics

All topics and content of the course such as
Techniques for preparation and staining
light microscopy: bright field, dark field
fluorescence microscopy
Structure and function of the plant cell
The plant cell in comparison to cells of the other kingdoms of life

Reading list

Literature and slides on the respective chapters will be provided and discussed during the course
