Liebe Studierende!

Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course deals with theoretical (overall philosophy, IUCN, CITES) and practical aspects of nature conservation and species protection, with the emphasis in the marine realm being on whales and dolphins, sea turtles and coral reefs, in the terrestrial realm on parrots, orangutans, black-footed ferrets, Przerwalski horses (thaki), etc
Dear students,

Nadja Ziegler and I (Michael Stachowitsch) will be making every attempt to hold our lectures in person this coming semester ("Präsenzlehre"). For this purpose we have successfully booked HS I for the initial period of the semester (14. Oct. to 25. Nov.). This room is expected to accommodate all registered participants. We are currently seeking an equally large-sized lecture room for December and January. If that fails, we have a fall-back room (Seminarraum 3 der Zoologie). Since that room only holds 24 persons, we would probably have to adopt some kind of alternative, "hybrid" online strategy. This strategy would have to be adopted earlier if additional COVID-related restrictions are imposed by the university.

Regardless of the room situation, both Nadja and I will be placing our PowerPoint lectures on Moodle as pdfs, and we may consider expanding this with audio or other digital files.

Assessment and permitted materials

A written exam is held at the end of the semester (2nd opportunity early in the following summer semester) consisting of multiple-choice and true/false questions as well as several written questions (short answers sufficient and preferred)

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

This course is designed to give students an introduction into the issues of nature conservation and species protection. An important aspect is to distinguish between what is on paper and what the situation is on site. Students get an insight into what they can expect when they volunteer for nature conservation work or focus their studies on nature conservation.

Examination topics

The lectures are based on powerpoint presentations. The coral and sea turtle lectures of the marine part utilize a large number of color images based on 20 years of experience and photodocumentation in the field.
