Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course lays out the principles of obtaining and analyzing representative quantitative data in biology, with focus on elementary (univariate) statistical methods. Covered procedures include the t-test, ANOVA, analysis of contingency tables, correlation methods, and ordinary least-squares linear regression analysis. Wherever appropriate, rank-based alternatives to 'classical' frequentist test approaches are presented for comparison.

Lectures will be recorded using u:stream. These records plus all slides will be made available to all registered students via Moodle. Accordingly, there will be no disadvantage to students who cannot personally attend the lectures. Please carefully watch the limitation in available seat numbers due to COVID-19 regulations! Please also note that procedures may need to be adapted on very short notice, if required, due to unforeseeable changes in COVID-19 regulations.

Assessment and permitted materials

Exam in writing.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

50 % of points (maximum possible: 25 points) are required to pass the exam. The exam consists of a multiple-choice part (19 questions; maximum: 19 points) and three questions where text items need to be filled out in writing (maximum: 6 points).
