Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The goal of this practical is to teach students how to think critically and how to use statistical methodologies to support scientific research. Those who rely on so-called "artificial intelligence" will not reach this goal.

We will start by learning the statistical programming language R. Previous programming experience is not essential but will be helpful.
Then we will address selected topics discussed in the course VO 301350 "Quantitative Methods in Molecular Biology" . We will write short scripts (and run more complex ones) to simulate various data analysis tasks.

A more detailed syllabus is available from Dr. András Aszódi upon request.

Assessment and permitted materials

Permanent assessment of exercise results during the practicals. In addition, "digital homework assignments" will be solved between the practicals.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Participants will be able to investigate biological questions using basic mathematical models and statistical methods.

Evaluation scale of submitted exercise solutions:
<50%: 5
<62.5%: 4
<75%: 3
<87.5%: 2
>=87.5%: 1

Examination topics

Practical exercises with R-based software.

Reading list

Will be provided during the exercises on the e-learning platform. See also the literature list of VO 301350.
