Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

In this course the participants will learn about the variety of approaches used in microbiome research, which rely primarily on DNA and RNA sequencing. Youwill learn to decide which approach is suitable to address which scientific question, what the strengths and limitations of the different approaches are, and in particularwhat requirements samples need to meet for wet-lab processing.
This is not a course including training in bioinformatic analysis of sequencing data, and rather covers all aspects of sequencing and sequence data generation which need to be considered beforehand, during sample preparation and processing.

Assessment and permitted materials

The evaluation will be based on active participation (4 writen assignments) (20%), public presentation of a paper chosen from a reading list (30%) and a written exam (50%)

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

compulsory attendance: 2 excused absences;
active participation: 3/4 written assignments handed in;
public presentation: must be completed;
final exam : must be passed positively.
an opportunity for improvement in the case of negative results is possible
