Aims, contents and method of the course

TransCon I

As of September 2020, the 'headings' can be changed

* 'Proof' of translation control
* Major components of the translation machinery
* Mechanism of mRNA translation, via BSc. Insights beyond :)
* Regulatory relevant RNA structures and sequences
* Signal transduction

Note: In SS 2021 there will be a lecture TransCon II focusing more on 'biology' than 'structure'. Participation in TransCon I is * not * a requirement but helpful.

Topic preview:
* Translation and cancer development
* Involvement in apoptosis
* intracellular mRNA distribution in developmental biology and beyond
* specifically RNA-binding and regulatory proteins
* differential mRNA stability

Assessment and permitted materials

A written exam at the end of the semester, followed by oral exams by arrangement.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Transcription control and protein phosphorylation are not all that make a decisive contribution to a cell's phenotype. Modifications to and through translation factors, structural and sequence elements in mRNAs, as well as changes in the mRNA stability contribute significantly to the regulation of gene expression, from developmental biology to oncogenesis.

Examination topics

Powerpoint presentation, lecture in English on demand only but slides entirely in English.
material will be uploaded shortly before the lecture (= laptop, tablet use possible) as PDF at
