We are aware that MMB students currently face a registration issue in the system. Due to the different 2026S requirements for MMB students (see below), the system will indicate that you cannot complete your registration because you don't meet the requirements. Unfortunately, this cannot be easily fixed at the moment.
However, your registration attempt is saved in the system even if it appears to fail. It is critical that you attempt to register. Even though the registration won't complete, your information and registration request will remain in the system.
We will compile a comprehensive list that includes all MMEI and MMB students who successfully registered in the system, as well as all MMB students who attempted to register but could not complete the process.
One week before the registration period closes in May, we will contact all students who either successfully registered or attempted to register. If you have not been contacted six days before the registration deadline, please reach out to Gijs Versteeg (contact information below).Requirements for 301843 UE Practical Course in Molecular and Cellular Immunobiology (2026S):MMEI master’s curricular requirement for enrollment to the course is the lecture 301364 VO “Research topics in Molecular Microbiology, Microbial Ecology and Immunobiology”. Students who completed the courses 301844 SE Advanced Techniques in Molecular and Cellular Immunobiology and 301008 PS Proseminar in Immunobiology will be prioritized.MMB master’s curricular requirement for enrollment to the course is the course 301008 PS Proseminar in Immunobiology. NOTE the EXCEPTION for Summer Semester 2026: MMB students without completion of the PS301008 can be accepted; however, the following prerequisite knowledge and skills are expected:• Knowledge and understanding of the overall organization of the immune system (innate and adaptive immunity, complement system, immune cell types, primary and secondary lymphoid organs, B and T cell selection, antigen presentation, effector responses)• As minimum requirement, good theoretical knowledge of basic analytical techniques e.g. flow cytometry, (immuno)fluorescence and fluorophores, SDS-PAGE and Western blotting, ELISA, reporter assays, RT-qPCR)• Well-developed lab skills at the Bachelor level (dilutions and concentration-related calculations, preparing stock solutions, pipetting, working under sterile conditions, replicates and basic statistics, graph reading and drawing, being able to read and interpret primary research figures, extracting key conclusions, writing short manuscript-style reports)• This prerequisite knowledge is essential for successful completion of the course. This knowledge will be tested during the course as well as in the final exam and is part of the grade as described in the Assessment. Missing immunobiology-related knowledge could be gained from the course 301260 VO Immunology and Cellular Microbiology, Part A, or books such as Janeway’s Immunobiology (Murphy, Weaver, Berg, 10th ed., chapter 1-8) or Kuby Immunology (Owen, Punt and Stranford, 7th ed.; chapter 1, 2, 4-8, 20, 23).

Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
Assessment and permitted materials
Students are assessed on the following criteria:1) Performance during the course (practical skills, knowledge and reasoning during black-board discussion, initiative and participation).2) Written exam; tests for knowledge, ability to apply knowledge, and perform scientific calculations relevant to the course material.3) Written report in scientific manuscript format; includes quality of the data, and experimental outcome.During the practical days of the course, use of the course manual and calculators is allowed. During the written exam, only the use of a standard calculator is allowed.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
a. Minimum requirements: Compulsory attendance (attendance during the whole course is a minimum requirement); the evaluation consists of different performances: active participation and results obtained, written report, theoretical knowledge including final exam. All students must have familiarized themselves with the course manual before start of the practical work.
b. Each of the three parts (lab performance, exam & report) will be evaluated separately with 10 to 0 points (best to worst). Positive score (5 points or higher) needs to be achieved in each of the three parts. Total score will be calculated following this key: lab performance 40%, exam 40%, report 20%. Grades will be calculated from the total score following this conversion scheme: 10-8.9 = 1; 8.8-7.6 = 2; 7.5-6.3 = 3; 6.2-5 = 4; <5 = 5

a. Aims: Students should learn immunological techniques, e.g. working with cell culture (sterile handling of cell lines, transfection of cells, isolation and differentiation of primary cells from bone marrow and spleen), antiviral assays, fluorescence microscopy, luciferase assays, FACS, purification of antibodies, immune precipitation, Western blot. Acquiring knowledge and experimental skills concerning the innate immune system, and functional assays on genetically modified mammalian cells.
b. contents: In this course part we will use CRISPR-Cas9 technology to make knock-outs of key genes of the innate immune system in human cells. The generated cells will be functionally tested using reporter assays.
