Requirements for participation:
The course is part of the MMEI master’s curriculum, and MMEI students will therefore be given priority. Students from MMB master’s and other non-MMEI students can be accepted but the following prerequisite knowledge and skills are expected:• Knowledge and understanding of the overall organization of the immune system (innate and adaptive immunity, complement system, immune cell types, primary and secondary lymphoid organs, B and T cell selection, antigen presentation, effector responses)• As minimum requirement, good theoretical knowledge of basic analytical techniques e.g. flow cytometry, (immuno)fluorescence and fluorophores, SDS-PAGE and Western blotting, ELISA, reporter assays, RT-qPCR)This prerequisite knowledge is essential for successful completion of the course. This knowledge will be tested during the course as well as in the final exam and is part of the grade as described in the Assessment. Content: The participants will review current methods to study immune responses and their regulation at the cellular and organismal level. The methods include the generation and use of transgenic animals in immunology (e.g. cre-based approaches, DT-mediated depletion, fate mapping), genome engineering & gene targeting in immunology, and imaging (2-photon, bioluminescence, mass cytometry, microfluidics).
Lectures by lecturers introducing methods and providing theoretical background. Presentations by students of key research papers employing the techniques discussed in the course.
The seminar is highly recommended for students who plan to attend the "Practical Course in Molecular and Cellular Immunobiology": in case of overregistration for the practical course, students who completed the seminar will be preferentially accepted.
