Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Objective: analyze a variety of text types considering the purpose of the translation; recognize translation-related difficulties and come up with targeted solutions; develop an awareness of ethical issues and diverging interests in transcultural communication
Contents:
- acquire basic translation skills trained on simple, non-technical texts; internalize individual translation steps; understand the scope and limitations of machine translation
- analyze source texts
- develop and apply translation-related strategies
- analyze and research text types in the source language
- peer-to-peer revision
- self-revision
- post-editing of machine-translated texts
Methods: individual and group work, peer-to-peer feedback, revision of corrected texts, group discussions

Assessment and permitted materials

- 2 written tests (30% each)
- group project (25%)
- participation and homework (15%)

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Attendance is mandatory (two absences will be allowed). All assignments must be submitted on time.
Passing grade: 60%.
Grading scale: ≥90% = 1, ≥80% = 2, ≥70% = 3, ≥60% = 4.

Examination topics

Evaluation will be based on the genres and exercise formats used in class.
