Aims, contents and method of the course

Learning objectives: (1) to help students improve their listening comprehension and discussion skills; (2) to raise students' awareness of writing processes; (3) to hone students' writing skills with a focus on the communication situation and text organization

Course content: developing listening comprehension strategies, critical listening and discussion skills, as well as producing spoken and written texts embedded in a specific communication situation

Teaching/learning methods (didactics): in-class listening, speaking, and writing activities (individual, pair, and group work), online activities, home assignments in oral comprehension and text production

Assessment and permitted materials

Participation in class and in online activities (10%), completion of written assignments (40%), mid-term test (20%), and final test (30%). Students are allowed to use monolingual dictionaries (no electronic devices) during the tests.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Attendance is mandatory (two absences are allowed).
An advanced level of both oral and written English is required.
Pass grade: 60%
Grading scale: 100-90% = 1 (Sehr gut), 89-80% = 2 (Gut), 79-70% = 3 (Befriedigend), 69-60% = 4 (Genügend), 59-0% = 5 (Nicht genügend)

Examination topics

Both tests will be based on the text types and exercise formats used in class and in the written assignments (mostly audio and video materials).
