Aims, contents and method of the course

This seminar is equivalent to the master's colloquium for students of Mulitlingual Technologies (MLT) and primarily directed at MLT students. The use of gender-fair language is a prerequisite for this colloquium and any following master's thesis. All participants of the seminar need to have already discussed their preliminary research idea for their master's thesis with a potential supervisor.

The objectives of this seminar are to specify and refine your already selected master's thesis topic, draft a detailed research design and plan for writing a master's thesis, and brush up on scientific methods and standards. At the end of the seminar, each student should have a clear idea and plan on how to proceed with and write their master's thesis.

To this end, the seminar initially alternates theoretical contents with practical exercises. The majority of the seminar will focus on student presentations on the individual topics, their discussion and refinement. Active participation in the discussions is strongly encouraged.

Further requirements:
Subsequent to the submission of the supervision agreement, you are expected to continuously work on your master's thesis and complete it within six months. Exceptions to this timeline have to be discussed personally with your potential supervisor.

Assessment and permitted materials

Performance will be measured based on three activities:
1) Oral presentation of the main concept of your master's thesis,
2) Submission of the writing assigment
3) Active participation and compliance with attendance requirements

The writing assignment consists of an overall exposé for the master's thesis as well as first theoretical chapter. It has to be submitted no later than one month after the individual dates of the oral presentation. You willl obtain feedback for all your written submissions and only the revised submissions after the integration of the initial feedback will be considered for grading.

Active participation not only in exercises but also discussions in class and feedback on each other's presentations are explicitly encouraged.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Minimum requirement is the completion of the oral presentation and final writing assignment with sufficient quality and contents as discussed in the seminar. The writing assignment needs to comply with all the formal and content guidelines and scientific standards.

Attendance is mandatory and only two lectures of 90 minutes may be missed. All and especially more lectures missed need to be accounted for officially with doctoral notes, so please do not consider these two lectures potentially missed for travels or holidays.

Examination topics

Presentation: slides have to be uploaded on Moodle until 10:00 am on the day of your presentation
Writing Assignment: has to be submitted no later than one month after the individual oral presentations.
