Aims, contents and method of the course

OBJECTIVE
To become aware of and understand the needs of target groups and the impact that these have on text design and text writing. Further, to develop a personal approach to dealing with different types of texts and genres and get a basic idea of translational concepts and strategies.

CONTENT
We will look at different types of texts and their requirements with special attention to various text functions and types, media, target groups, writing process(es), revision, and argumentation. Basic translation exercises towards the end of the semester.

METHODS
Assignments will be prepared individually and in groups, completed at home and presented in class for discussion. More detailed feedback any time upon (voluntary) submisson of individual assignments

Assessment and permitted materials

Regular attendance is mandatory (two absences allowed).
Grading will be based on the following:
- 1 mid-term test (30%)
- 1 final test (30%)
- 1 written partner assignment (20%)
- 1 written individual assignment (20%)
Students must attain a passing grade on all components of the course.
A monolingual dictionary may be used during exams.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

- Excellent knowledge of working languages.
- Students are required to demonstrate that they can apply and possibly adapt the methods and strategies presented in class to new texts and genres.
- Development of personal writing skills .

Examination topics

Students will achieve the course objectives by:
- analysing and assessing a variety of texts (individual/group projects)
- writing, adapting/rewriting and optimizing texts for various situations, target groups and media
- reflecting on and discussing various steps in the text production process
- incorporating theoretical input given in class in their assignments and applying strategies and methods accordingly.
