Aims, contents and method of the course

Course objectives:
- Improvement of skills needed to interpret and produce grammatically correct and stylistically appropriate texts in standard English (both British and American standard);
- Raising awareness of the semantic/pragmatic nuances involved in making grammatical choices and resulting from them;
- Increasing students' appreciation of the syntax-semantics interface in texting;
Content:
Student-centered approach: Students determine the issues to be discussed in class in a survey at the course start.
Possible topics: Tense/Aspect, Mood, Voice, Conditionals, Inversion, Word formation, Lexical/Syntactic Creativity in English, Modals, Catenative Verbs, Reported Speech, Relative Clauses, Determiners, Adjectives vs. Adverbs, Idiomaticity, Metaphor & Metonymy etc.
Methods:
Discussion in plenum, pair work, group work. Inverted classroom model.
The language of instruction is English.

- Midterm Test
- Final Test
- Assignments (in-class and homework)
No electronic devices permitted.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Make-up of the final grade:
Midterm Test: 40 points
Final Test: 40 points
Assignments: 20 points

Grading:
0 - 59 pts - 5
60 - 69 pts - 4
70 - 79 pts - 3
80 - 89 pts - 2
90 - 100 pts - 1

In order to receive a final pass grade, both tests must be positive (over 50%).
