Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

In this hand-on course the students will deepen their ability to reflect on different characteristics of discourse. They will be introduced to and use concepts such as text function, text type conventions, target groups and media-specific requirements to analyse discursive decisions and the effects these have on the target text.
Exercises including analysis of textual devices to respond to variety of target groups, media and communication situations, and functions will be explored. Corpus tools and analysis will be used to critically analyze the texts' macro and micro structures, their text type characteristics and discourse strategies. By doing so, the students will gain an understanding of how linguistic devices and methods can be used by individuals and institutions to communicate effectively their messages.
Students will need to complete assignments involving a range of textual analysis frameworks and technologies. Students complete tasks such as text analysis, corpus building and analysis, and presentation, individually or collaborative as part of a team project.
The classroom materials will be in both in Romanian and English.
