Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course focuses on developing the skills required for translating specialised texts (Engineering and the Natural Sciences).

Contents:
Analysing texts from the fields of technology and science; working on specialist terminology. Students will familiarise themselves with complex topics in both working languages; use of glossaries and specialist terminology databases; independent research (content-related, linguistic, terminology); work with different types of texts.
Method:
- Discussing the challenges of translating specialised texts.
- Discussing the source texts in class - analysing the source text with regard to the terminological challenges
- Terminology research

The language combinations (directions) covered in the course will be determined at the beginning of the semester based on the students’ curricular requirements. In mixed groups, both relevant language directions will be included.

Students must complete at least three translation assignments using memoQ or another CAT tool and submit them in an appropriate export format.

Assessment and permitted materials

- Active participation in class activities
- Homework, submission of glossaries etc.
- Assessment criteria for the translation:

We will work with AI- tools in class, but the use of AI must be explicitly indicated throughout.

Assessments will reflect the translation directions relevant to each student. One assessment will take place in Media Lab under the same conditions and requirements as the final examination (Modulprüfung).

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Active participation in class activities
Homework (preparation of glossaries, translations, presentations)
Participation in written tests.
Grading scale:
100-90% = 1 (Very good), 89-80% = 2 (Good), 79-70% = 3 (Satisfactory), 69-60% = 4 (Sufficient), 59-0% = 5 (Unsatisfactory)

To receive a passing overall grade, students must achieve a passing result in all translation directions relevant to them under the curriculum.

Students from other degree programmes may choose their language combinations for the course, provided that this does not require additional exercises or assessment tasks.

Examination topics

Continuous assessment.
