Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Objectives:
This course covers the fundamentals of translating specialist texts in the field of economics from Spanish into German and from German into Spanish. The aim of the course is for students to acquire fundamental skills in specialist translation, to employ appropriate research strategies and various translation technologies in order to produce translations that meet the requirements of the commission, justify translation decisions on a theoretical basis, apply text-type conventions independently, contextualise specialist terminology, and acquire metacommunicative skills for successful communication with clients.

Content and methodology:
In this course, students will explore the fundamentals of business terminology; basic knowledge of selected areas of business (e.g. annual reports, business administration, economics) and the appropriate terminology from these respective fields will be taught. The texts are discussed during the sessions, and various possible solutions are compared. Preparation takes place at home, independently before each session, and may be carried out using any resources. On the basis of the translations prepared by the students, translation strategies are analysed and reflected upon collectively. These include, in particular, research methods, working with dictionaries, CAT tools, machine translation, AI and parallel texts, as well as dealing with specific translation assignments. The use of translation-related technologies is an integral part of the course and is addressed in a practical manner.
