Aims, contents and method of the course

Contents
This StEOP lecture aims to provide students with an introduction to transcultural communication and to explain the relationship between transcultural communication and translation. The lecture covers the following key topics:
• Cultural concepts + transculturality
• Identity constructions, othering – discourses in connection with the question of power
• Fundamentals of cultural studies
• Fundamentals of communication studies
• Transcultural communication as an academic subject
• Translation as transcultural communication
• Translation as transfer

Objectives
To become familiar with and understand the fundamentals of transcultural communication.

Method
Lecture

Assessment and permitted materials

StEOP module exam Transcultural Communication I: Multiple choice test without any aids.
EC and Erasmus students: Written exam (consisting of three multiple choice questions and two open-ended questions) without any aids.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Developing a basic understanding of transcultural communication and translation and their integration into communication science and cultural studies.

Assessment criteria for the StEOP module examination Transcultural Communication I, which covers the content of the
lectures Transcultural Communication and Multilingualism and Linguae francae:
The total number of points is 40, with a maximum of 1 point per question.
≥ 34.8 points (87%) = 1
≥ 30 points (75%) = 2
≥ 25.2 points (63%) = 3
≥ 20 points (50%) = 4
< 20 points (49%) = 5

Assessment scale for EC and Erasmus students:
The total number of points is 14.
13-14 points > 1
11-12 points > 2
9-10 points > 3
7-8 points > 4
0-6 points > 5
