Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The course is intended to be attended in connection with a potential master’s thesis. In addition to Prof. Barbara Wessner, Prof. Csapo is also available as a supervisor.

The course covers the following topics:
-) Literature search using PubMed
-) Planning of the master thesis project
-) Writing the thesis proposal (Exposé), final supervision agreement after successfull completion

Topics supervised by Prof. Csapo:
-) exclusively by prior arrangement

Topics supervised by Prof. Wessner:
-) exclusively by prior arrangement

Assessment and permitted materials

Attendance at the agreed appointments including a short topic presentation, completion of topic-specific tasks assigned by the supervisor, and submission of the thesis proposal (exposé).

In courses with continuous assessment, all student performance requirements must be completed by 31 March of the following year for winter semester courses, and by 31 October of the following year for summer semester courses at the latest. All students who have been allocated a place in the course must be assessed unless they have deregistered within the prescribed deadline or can credibly demonstrate a valid reason for discontinuing the course. (§ 10 para. 6, Study Law Section of the Statutes of the University of Vienna)

A continuously assessed course that has been graded negatively must be repeated by enrolling in and completing the course again. A commission-based assessment is not permitted. (§ 10 para. 7, Study Law Section of the Statutes)

Students who use unauthorized aids during examinations (e.g. cheating, copying, plagiarism, falsification, ghostwriting, etc.) will not be assessed (entry in u:space: X = not assessed). The examination attempt will be documented separately in the transcript of records and will be counted toward the maximum number of permitted attempts. (§ 12 para. 6, Study Law Section of the Statutes)

Length: approx. 5–10 pages (excluding cover page and reference list)
Format: font size 11–12, 1.5 line spacing, page numbers, cover page
Correct academic referencing style (APA or Vancouver, depending on the institute)

2) Content Requirements (minimum)

-) Background / problem statement (Why is the topic relevant in training science / exercise physiology?)
-) Current state of research (brief overview)
-) Aim of the thesis
-) Research question(s) (clearly formulated)
-) Hypothesis/hypotheses (if empirical)
-) Methods / study design (e.g., sample, measurement methods, variables, exercise protocol)
-) Planned data analysis / statistics (which tests/models, which variables, which software)
-) Expected results / scientific contribution
-) Limitations and potential challenges
-) Timeline (key milestones)
-) Reference list
