Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The course is aimed at first-year doctoral students at the Faculty of Historical and Cultural Studies (Ancient history and classical studies, Art history, Byzantine and Neo-Greek studies, Classical archaeology, Egyptology, European ethnology, History, Jewish studies and Prehistory and historical archaeology).

The course provides important information about the organisation of doctoral studies, gives space for reflection on one's own project and medium-term life and career planning, prepares students for the public presentation of their thesis project (Fakultätsöffentliche Präsentation, FÖP) and, last but not least, offers the opportunity to get to know colleagues who are also at the beginning of their PhD.

Further topics covered include the relationship to the supervisor, possibilities for exchange with peers and other members of the faculty, offers of the Doctoral School, the management of research data, ethical aspects of research including the use of AI and possibilities for funding.

The course will be organized as a mix of presentations, discussions and group work. We will also invite colleagues and experts. The course is accompanied by a mentoring programme, where advanced PhD-students provide help in the preparation of the Exposé and the FÖP.
