Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The event serves as an open forum for the history of knowledge and science and is primarily designed for doctoral students in these and related fields. We aim to explore current trends in the field - e.g. renewed interest in activism and counter-knowledge, epistemic decolonization, a critical history of data and resources, new materialism, incorporation of natural-scientific concepts and findings, or the move from historical to political epistemology.
The focus will be on the discussion of pre-circulated drafts from ongoing dissertation projects. These discussions will be combined with (1) an introductory workshop; (2) short presentations by participants on methodological or conceptual questions; (3) a final workshop. In addition, we plan to invite colleagues from the Department of Science and Technology Studies as well as a joint session with the colloquium of the FSP History of Science.

Discussions will be in English, unless the discussed chapter is in German and the presenter prefers to discuss in German

Assessment and permitted materials

There are two ways to pass the seminar: (1) Participants regularly attend the sessions and present a dissertation chapter which meets minimum requirements of academic writing. Short presentation and writing a summary of one classroom discussion are optional. (2) Participants attend the meetings regularly but do not present a chapter of their dissertation. Short presentation and writing a summary of one classroom discussion are compulsory. - It is possible to audit one or more sessions without acquiring ECTS points; please contact us by email.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

(1) The minimum requirements for passing the course are that the participants attend the course regularly, that the submitted dissertation chapter meets minimum requirements of length and technical quality, and that the participant has discussed the chapter in class. If all three criteria are met, a “Sehr gut/1” will be awarded. Otherwise, a lower grade will be awarded or compensation may be required.
(2) The minimum requirements for successful completion are that the participant attends the course regularly, writes a summary of a classroom discussion and gives a short presentation that meets minimum requirements in terms of length and technical quality.
