Aims, contents and method of the course

In this seminar, we will practice key skills for a career in academia, focusing in particular on academic talks and publishing. Each participant will take on the role of a conference speaker, an author, and a reviewer. To this end, each participant is asked to suggest an academic paper from their own field of research, which the group will analyze and comment on together. The focus will be on both form and content, such as presentation and writing style, structure, argumentation, exegesis and interpretation of primary sources, philosophical persuasiveness of the position represented, etc.
The publication process will be practiced in the seminar in the following role play:
• Each participant will present the selected text in a short presentation (10 to max. 15 minutes) and answer questions from other participants in a subsequent discussion.
• After the seminar, a short critical reply paper (approx. 2000 words) to the presented paper will be written within 10 days.
• This reply paper will be made available to all other participants for reading ( moodle).
• Another participant will be selected to write a short referee report (approx. 500-1000 words) of this reply paper, which will also be made available to everyone ( moodle).
• In the next session, all participants discuss the reply paper, taking the referee report into account, and provide constructive support and advice to the author in the further revision process.
• The review and the seminar discussion form the basis on which the reply paper must be revised and submitted to the instructor within four weeks.
The seminar will also provide an opportunity for joint critical reflection on the skills practiced and for discussion of other topics relevant to the profession.
IMPORTANT: Please think about which published research article (from a leading journal in your field of research) you would like to present before the first session. This will be the article on which you will then write a reply paper.
Presentations and texts may be given or written in English. At the request of the participants, the class discussion may be held in English.

Assessment and permitted materials

Preparation for the sessions, reading all texts to be discussed (i.e., academic paper, reply paper, and referee report), presentation, active discussion and feedback for speakers, writing a reply paper and an referee report, revision of the reply paper.
The assessment is based on the presentation (max. 30 points), the reply paper (max. 50 points), and active participation (including referee report) (max. 20 points).

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

1. Regular attendance and preparation of all texts (research papers, reply papers, referee reports) and active participation in seminar discussions.
2. Proposal for a research paper, presentation (10 to max. 15 minutes) and subsequent discussion.
3. Reply paper to the research paper (approx. 2000 words).
4. Writing a referee report on the reply paper of another participant.
5. Revision of the reply paper (approx. 2,500 words).
The grade is based on the presentation (max. 30 points), the reply paper (max. 50 points), and active participation (including referee report) (max. 20 points).
Grading scale:
1 (very good) 100-90 points
2 (good) 89-81 points
3 (satisfactory) 80-71 points
4 (sufficient) 70-60 points
5 (insufficient) 59-0 points

Examination topics

There is no exam. Assessment will be carried out as described above.

Reading list

The texts will be selected by the participants and decided upon in the first session. Further texts will be announced during the course.
