Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course focuses on how to develop and write effective research proposals, including (but not limited to) grant applications, requests for telescope time or computing resources, and research plans or statements for academic applications.

Following a general introduction to proposal development and writing strategies, the course will address the specific requirements and conventions of proposal types relevant to the participants. Participants will then plan, draft, and refine their own proposals. Throughout the course, sessions will also serve as structured writing and feedback sessions, during which participants are expected to actively work on their proposals and receive targeted feedback.

Assessment and permitted materials

Assessment will be out of 100 points:
- 40 points for the proposal
- 40 points for a final presentation of the proposal (with slides)
- 20 for active participation during the lectures.
Detailed criteria for evaluating the presentations will be provided in the course and on moodle.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Students should attend at least 80% of the lectures (including the final presentations; any difficulties should be communicated in advance). They must also submit the proposal and present it.

If they fulfil these requirements, then the grading will be:
90 - 100 points = 1
80 - 89 points = 2
70 - 79 points = 3
60 - 69 points = 4
0 - 59 points = 5
