Aims, contents and method of the course

The course is aligned with the proficiency levels for language competence as described in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). The primary objective of the course is to achieve C1 (advanced) level language proficiency, as well as to provide students with a foundation in the functional styles of the Russian language.
The course engages with literary, cultural, and linguistic texts at an academic level. Students work with advanced reading and listening materials, participate in discussions, and practice writing structured written statements, with the aim of being able to express themselves clearly, coherently, and in detail on complex topics.
Focus on stylistics: presenting and summarizing academic texts.
Focus on grammar: the expression of temporality in complex sentences, participial and adverbial participial constructions, as well as syntax and punctuation at an academic level.
In the first class session, a placement test at B2 level is administered; in the final class session, a final examination at C1 level is conducted.

Assessment and permitted materials

Regular active participation (approx. 20%) and continuous assessment (approx. 80%), including homework assignments, written and oral contributions, tests, and a written final examination in the last class session.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Learning outcomes:
Ability to analyse and critically evaluate even advanced philological texts in Russian at a high level; solid knowledge of the functional styles and stylistic devices of the Russian language.
A total of 100 points can be achieved:
Two short tests (grammar and orthography; the better of the two is counted):
10 points per test → 10 points total
Class participation: 10 points
First presentation (based on a Russian academic text, presented in Russian): 20 points
Second presentation (based on a German academic text, presented in Russian): 10 points
Essay: 20 points
Written examination: 30 points
Grading scale:
1 (very good): 100–90 points
2 (good): 89–81 points
3 (satisfactory): 80–71 points
4 (pass): 70–61 points
5 (fail): 60–0 points

Examination topics

The entire course content (including, among other things, the analysis of texts with regard to their stylistic features, discussions and essays on course topics, exercises in idiomatic usage, the reading and analysis of literary and academic texts, as well as independent reading assignments).
