Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
The course's main aim is to offer an insight into Miroslav Krleža's prose writings up until the appearance of his seminal novel Povratak Filipa Latinovicza (The Return of Filip Latinovicz) in 1932. Through a series of close analyses of selected examples, the politics of Krleža's prose will be examined with regards to geo-political fantasies (Hodorlahomor veliki), gender constructs and “small-town” aesthetics (Tri kavaljera frajle Melanije), war and imperialism (Hrvatski bog Mars), modernity and psychoanalysis (Povratak Filipa Latinovicza). Within Krleža's early prose, these, as well as other thematic clusters are represented by means of a pronouncedly modernist narrative technique, which is going to be scrutinized foremost with regards to representations of consciousness, multilingualism and temporal structures. The selected examples should therefore lead to an in-depth understanding of Krleža's aesthetic and political preoccupations, while demonstrating that in many cases the two cannot be told apart. Finally, the course will board the question of Krleža's early prose articulating a form of “peripheral modernism”, which foreshadows many of the aspects of his cultural program for Yugoslavia advocated after WWII.
