Aims, contents and method of the course

Lecture
Modernism and Its Conflicts: Polish Literature around 1900 from the Perspective of Gabriela Zapolska

This lecture course examines the literary transformations of Polish literature around 1900 (the period known as Młoda Polska, or Young Poland) within the broader context of European modernism. The course focuses on the work of Gabriela Zapolska as a key figure situated at the intersection of naturalism, modernism, and modern drama.

The lectures address questions of poetics, character construction, irony, narrative technique, the representation of the bourgeoisie, and the transformation of female figures at the turn of the century. The course adopts a literary-analytical approach and is grounded in close textual analysis.

Assessment and permitted materials

Final written examination at the end of the semester.
The use of monolingual and bilingual dictionaries is permitted.
