Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Film has a powerful ability to depict, interpret, and disseminate the past. Astrid Erll's specifically coined term "memory film" illustrates that film is internationally a leading medium for memory culture. Memory films serve as "identity-stabilizing long-term communication" (A. Assmann) and shape historical images across entire generations and regions.
In the South Slavic region, film played a central role in Titoist Yugoslavia in constructing a viable historical narrative, particularly regarding World War II. Yugoslavia's successor states also repeatedly and prominently address historical-political processes (e.g., the wars of YU disintegration, the post-socialist transformation, etc) in and through film. In this course, Bulgarian, Bosnian, Croatian, Macedonian, Montenegrin, Serbian, and Slovenian memory films will be subjected to a film-immanent and contextual analysis to capture their memory cultural potential. The films will be selected jointly in the seminar, participants are encouraged to contribute their own expertise and interests.
