Aims, contents and method of the course

The course is an introduction to the cultural history of the Czech and Slovak avant-garde of Surrealism in the period between 1929 and 1945 and its relations to the French Surrealism and European intellectual (scientific) initiatives such asRussian Formalism, structural linguistics, Viennese neo-positivistic school, and psychoanalysis. It focuses on literary manifestos, construction of aesthetic theory, literary scholarship, linguistics and philosophy on the one hand and on the poetical practice of the avant-garde of Czech and Slovak Surrealism on the other. Selected historical documents (manifestos and theoretical texts) and examples of poetry / works of art (collages, paintings) will be discussed, but also some examples of the crafts (book art). Methodologically, the course is based on historical-discursive analysis of programmatic texts, historical and poetical interpretation of artistic texts (poetry), and historical and aesthetic interpretation of selected works of art (paintings).

Assessment and permitted materials

Short presentations and bachelor theses (30-40 pages) on specified or accepted topics.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The students have to understand the historical development of the Czech and Slovak Surrealist avant-garde in its European cultural and socio-political context. They have to identify the rhetoric and characteristic features of the aesthetic of the European, Czech and Slovak Surrealism and their social, artistic and scientific claims.
The assessment standard is measured by the ability to provide historical interpretation of programmatic and artistic texts of the Czech and Slovak Surrealism.

Examination topics

Historical survey of the development of the Surrealist movement in Czechoslovakia and its theoretical implications during the Interbellum, or, till 1945; selected discursive and literary texts (their historical interpretation).

Selection of discursive and poetical texts by Vítezslav Nezval, Konstatin Biebl, Karel Teige, Bohuslav Brouk, Jan Mukarovský, Mikuláš Bakoš, Igor Hrušovský, Karl Terebessy, Vladimír Reisel, Ján Rak, Michal Považan, Rudolf Fabry. The texts will be given to the students at the beginning of the course in German informative translations.
