Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The main focus of this colloquium are different constellations and case studies of minority languages, small languages and varieties without clear national categorization in urban spaces. The aim is to discuss important theoretical concepts as well as to get to know various case studies. These include, for example, Burgenland Croatian in Vienna, Arbanese in Zadar, Sorbian in German cities, Molise Croatian in Italian cities, or Rusyn in urban centres. During the semester, students will have to prepare assigned theoretical texts and topics, which will then be presented and discussed in class. On 14th of May 2020, a scientific symposium will be held on the topic of the colloquium, which will also be included in the semester plan.

Assessment and permitted materials

As the Colloquium implies continuous assessment of course work, students must attend. Students are expected reading the assigned literature, actively participating and taking part in discussions. The attendants will have to prepare assigned topics, tasks and/or reading material, the findings will be presented and discussed in class. During the semester, posters on case studies will be produced jointly, which will then also be presented and discussed throughout the above-mentioned symposium. At the end of the semester, students need to submit an essay (5 pages).
