This course provides a fundamental introduction to key issues in the teaching profession and the institution of the school. Students develop an initial understanding of the teaching profession grounded in educational science and sensitive to diversity. They examine the school’s educational mission in the context of current societal developments and challenges—particularly globalization, digitalization, inclusion, multilingualism, and social heterogeneity—and reflect on their own academic and career prospects in the context of the relationship between personal motivation and professional responsibility. In addition, they acquire a fundamental understanding of social and linguistic diversity in the educational context, as well as of basic concepts of language education and German as a second language.Content:
The lecture introduces key terms, concepts, and theories in educational science and provides fundamental knowledge about schools as institutions within the Austrian educational system, as well as their structural, historical, and legal frameworks. The course addresses the educational mission of schools and the teaching profession in the context of current societal developments and educational policy discourses. Additional key topics include the examination of social and linguistic diversity, multilingualism, inclusive and discrimination-sensitive educational processes, as well as fundamental concepts of language education and German as a second language. The course content is linked to questions of professional development and reflection on students’ own educational, academic, and career perspectives.Methods:
Lecture with in-depth analysis using case studies, academic texts, and selected empirical materials (e.g., classroom videos, interview excerpts, vignettes).
