Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

In 1923, Louis de Broglie formulated his idea that matter-waves should "solve all problems related to quanta".
100 years later we realize that his bold idea was only the start of quantum wave mechanics as we know it today and this science has led to a plethora of fundamental studies and interesting applications, with all sorts of particles from electrons over neutrons and atoms to molecules, clusters, nanoparticles and even antimatter. We will be interested in exploiting quantum superpositions over large distances, with high masses, in complex objects, in linear and rotational space.

In this seminar we will explore modern applications of matter-waves, dicsuss instruments that have been or could be built and applications that are being pursued around the world. The focus will be put on real-world challenges such as inertial sensing, geodesy, navigation, molecular science, lithography, coherent imaging, precision metrology and the search for novel forces and physics beyond the standard model.

The seminar is recommended for students in the quantum master or PhD program with active research interests in the field.

Assessment and permitted materials

Every participant shall prepare a presentation on the topic of their choice (agreed with the team). This can be a black board presentation or a power point talk. Active participation in > 80% of the meetings provides the other 50% of the grade.
