Since the time, when the Internet has become a mass medium, hacking has evolved to be a "general sport" for certain groups. Hackers do cost a lot of effort for those who operate services on the network. Besides this, any owner of a personal computer may be a victim of hacker attacks.
This lecture is designed to teach understanding possible threats and how to efficiently combat hackers. Hacking methods are shown. The proper design of security concepts and secure services is discussed. An overview of firewalls, their merits and disadvantages rounds up design criteria of secure networks and systems. The installation and setup of two different firewalls is presented in greater detail. Methods of defeating new viruses, worms and Trojan horses are presented. Special emphasis is put on the correct users behaviour, since sloppy users are most likely the biggest danger for their computer: "The enemy often sits behind its own keyboard".
The lecture incorporates both, theoretical and practical, aspects of advanced internet security.
