This lecture covers the physiology of the senses in humans and animals, including the auditory, vestibular, olfactory, gustatory and somato-sensory systems, the senses of temperature and pain. Each sensory modality is used to exemplify aspects of sensory processing from stimulus encoding at the periphery to the feature extraction in the sensory cerebral cortex. Mechanisms of signal transduction, the function of neurons and neuronal networks are described. Finally, approaches to new problems in the above fields are discussed which are needed to pursue research in neurophysiology in the future. Written examination.
