Examination topics

Multi-media based teaching (PPT, internet, audio and/or video presentations of songs, plays and films) throughout, combined with interactive teaching and the use of the e-learning platform (Moodle). Further in-depth study of individual texts will be provided in tutorials by a tutor.

Assessment and permitted materials

The final (written) exam will test both the students' knowledge of the subject matters presented during the semester in class and their ability to analyse texts from the “Reading List“ in some detail; the final exam consists of a short creative essay on a given topic (about 300 words) plus a set of specific questions on authors, genres, individual works, theories, the historical background, definitions of terms etc., students will also be required to interpret (at least) one poem or a passage from a play in some detail. (The exam does not make use of a multiple choice questionnaire!!! - An example of a final exam from a previous semester can be downloaded from the e-learning platform Moodle).

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

To introduce first-and second-year students of English into the political, cultural and literary history of the English Renaissance and the early Neoclassical Age; to advance students' skills in interpreting poems, plays and prose works within the given cultural and historical contexts; to familiarize students with aspects of stylistics, prosody, with theories of drama and poetry as well as with the Elizabethan world-view and the Elizabethan conception of gender roles.
